This image shows a woman being hung at Gallow Hill, Salem, Massachusetts, during the Salem Witch trials in 1692. These trials came about because of the spread of religious uncertainty and resource strain that was spreading in the colonies. The resource strain was caused by the war with France that recently ended creating many refugees that fled to Salem. The people would burn greedy landowners and claim that they were being influenced by the Devil. Others would be accused by people that were experiencing fits or misfortunes and used it to discredit a possible competitor.
