This photo depicts Union President Abraham Lincoln and Confederate President Jefferson Davis tearing apart a map of the United States. This map is a mataphor for the civil war being fought by the two presidents. McClellan, however, is attempting to stop them both from destroying the United States. McClellan ran as the Democratic presidential nominee against Lincoln in 1864. Although the Democratic Party denounced the war and called for a quick end to it, McClellan himself opposed this idea. This image reflects the political disunion occurring in the North during the civil war, and shows that Lincoln's suspension of habeus corpus for anti-unionists and the relative tactical failure of the union during the first years of the civil war almost cost Lincoln his re-election.
